Quick Answer: Amazon Associates is Amazon's own affiliate program. You apply with a qualifying website or mobile app, place tagged links, and earn a commission on qualifying purchases. As of October 2026 the standard US rates run from 0% to 10% by product category, and the link tracks for 24 hours, or up to 89 days when the item is added to the cart. Rates and rules are set per country program.

Summary in short

  • Amazon Associates is a per-sale program run in-house by Amazon. The directory lists it as Amazon Associates with manual approval and a high-confidence record.
  • You need a qualifying website or mobile app. Social media creators with an established following are pointed to the separate Amazon Influencer Program.
  • US category rates checked on 2 October 2026 range from 0% to 10%. Most everyday categories sit between 1% and 4.5%.
  • The tracking window is 24 hours from the click, or up to 89 days if the product was added to the cart in that session.
  • Commission is paid about 60 days after the end of the month in which it was earned.
  • Each country has its own Associates program, so a US account does not automatically cover other Amazon stores.
  • Low rates and a short window make Amazon a weak fit for some niches, where recurring or higher-value programs pay more per referral.

What Amazon Associates is

Amazon Associates is the affiliate program of Amazon's retail catalogue. The official Associates home page describes it as a way for bloggers, publishers and content creators to earn commissions from qualifying purchases by driving traffic to Amazon with customised linking tools. It is a per-sale model: you are paid when a visitor you sent buys, not for the click and not for a sign-up.

Amazon runs the program itself, with no affiliate network in between. In the directory the network is listed as "In-house", and the attribution model is last click. That matters when you compare it with programs on networks such as Impact or Awin, where one login can give you access to many brands. With Amazon, you join Amazon's program and nothing else.

The directory also notes a separate Amazon Influencer Program for social media creators. Amazon's home page points creators with an established following to that program, so check which route fits before you apply.

Who can apply and what Amazon expects

The site or app

The official home page states that bloggers, publishers and content creators need a qualifying website or mobile app. The directory record repeats this as a restriction: the program requires a qualifying website or mobile app. You sign up directly through the program's website, and Amazon reviews each application and approves those that meet its criteria.

The Program Policies add content expectations. As of October 2026 they say sites must contain "original content" with significant commentary, analysis or transformation of any materials you include. When you link to pages with product lists, you must have additional original content relevant to the link. A thin page with a grid of product links is exactly what that wording is aimed at. If you are starting from zero, the guide to affiliate programs for beginners covers the kind of site that gets accepted by most programs.

The same policies also say a site that is unsuitable is not eligible for the program, and that Amazon notifies you of acceptance or rejection.

How approval works

The directory records approval as manual. Amazon evaluates the application and tells you the outcome. The directory does not list an approval time, and the official pages I opened this session do not state one, so treat any specific number of days you read elsewhere as unconfirmed.

The qualification rule for new accounts

Many guides say a new account must refer a set number of qualifying sales within a set period or it is closed. I could not confirm an exact number or time window on any official Amazon page I opened this session: the Operating Agreement, the Program Policies and the Associates home page do not state it, and the directory record says the rule "was not confirmed on the pages opened". So this guide does not give a figure. Read the rule in your own Associates Central account after you are accepted, and plan your first weeks of traffic around it.

Commission rates by category

Amazon pays by product category, not per account. The table below comes from the standard rate schedule on the Associates help pages, checked on 2 October 2026. It covers the US program (amazon.com) and the categories as the page groups them. Each row also includes related categories the page lists, so check the live page for the exact category you promote.

Category group (US)Standard rate
Luxury Beauty, Luxury Stores Beauty, Amazon Explore10.00%
Digital Music, Physical Music, Handmade, Digital Videos5.00%
Physical Books, Kitchen, Automotive4.50%
Tablets, Kindles, fashion items, smart devices, watches, luggage, shoes4.00%
Toys, Furniture, Home, Home Improvement, Lawn & Garden and related3.00%
PC, PC Components, DVD & Blu-Ray2.50%
Televisions, Digital Video Games2.00%
Amazon Fresh, Physical Video Games and Consoles, Grocery1.00%
Gift Cards, Wireless Service Plans, Alcoholic Beverages and others0.00%
All other categories not specified4.00%

The page also lists special programs with fixed bounty payments, from $0.25 to $30, for things such as Prime sign-ups, Audible memberships, Kindle services and registry creation.

The top rate of 10% applies to a narrow set of categories, while home, kitchen, toys and electronics pay between 2% and 4.5%, and some categories pay 0%. The directory notes that rates, thresholds and rules differ by country program. Do not apply the US table to Amazon's other stores.

Amazon's window is short. The directory records it as "24 hours (89 days if added to cart)". The Program Policies back this up: a session ends at the first of three events, which are 24 hours passing since the click, the customer placing an order for a non-digital product, or the customer clicking through someone else's Associates link. For a purchase to qualify through the cart route, the customer must add the product to the cart in that session and complete the order no later than 89 days after the initial click.

For content planning, this favours pages where the reader is close to buying, such as comparisons and specific product reviews, over early research content.

What happens when someone buys something else

Because the link tracks a session, the visitor may add other products too. The policies I opened define qualifying purchases around products ordered after a click through your link, and they say any product order with a cancellation, return or refund initiated does not qualify for commission. They also say the qualifying revenue for a purchase is the amount Amazon actually receives from it. I could not confirm on an official page the exact treatment of unrelated items bought in the same session, so I do not state a rule for that. Your reporting inside Associates Central shows what was credited, and that is the source to trust.

How payouts work

The home page says commission income is paid approximately 60 days after the end of the month in which it was earned. The directory record adds the details, with the note that it comes from the US program:

  • Methods: direct deposit, Amazon gift card, or check.
  • Minimum: $10 for direct deposit and gift card, with a gift card maximum of $2,000. A check has a $100 minimum and a $15 processing fee.
  • Currency: USD.

Rules that trip people up

Amazon's Operating Agreement (updated October 15, 2025 on the page I opened) and Program Policies (listed in the directory as updated April 14, 2026) are strict, and Amazon can end the relationship with notice. The Operating Agreement allows either party to terminate at any time with written notice, effective 7 calendar days from the notice. The points below are the ones I could verify.

Disclosure wording

The agreement requires you to clearly and prominently state: "As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases." It goes on your site, or any other location where Amazon authorises display. The policies also require compliance with applicable law, including the US FTC guidance on endorsements and testimonials.

Email, messaging and offline use

The policies prohibit offline promotion: no promotional activity in printed material, ebooks, mailings or oral solicitation using Amazon's trademarks or logos. Special Links in email, SMS and direct messaging from your social media sites are allowed only when the communications are solicited, meaning the receiving customer opted in.

Price display

If you show prices, the policies require a timestamp-style disclaimer saying that prices and availability are accurate as of the date and time indicated and are subject to change.

You may not cloak, hide, spoof or otherwise obscure the URL of your site containing Special Links, or the user agent of the application in which program content is displayed. Use the tagged link formats Amazon provides.

The directory marks paid ads and brand bidding as "Restricted". Its restriction note says you cannot bid on keywords containing "amazon", "Kindle" or other Amazon trademarks where the ad is a Prohibited Paid Search Placement. Read the definition in the policies before you run any ad.

Regional programs

Amazon runs separate Associates programs per marketplace. The directory record lists the geography as the United States "with separate programs for other Amazon marketplaces" and notes programs in many countries, including the UK, Canada, Germany, France, Japan, India, Brazil and Australia. The home page says the program operates across multiple countries with localised versions.

In practice, you sign up for each country's program separately, and rates, thresholds and rules differ per country. If you publish for readers in several markets, plan on several accounts and read each country's own terms. Browse the directory's country pages for the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, India, Brazil and Australia to see which programs are listed for each market.

When Amazon is a poor fit

Amazon is easy to understand and every reader already knows the brand. That is its strength. The trade-offs are plain from the data:

  • Low rates. Most categories pay between 1% and 4.5%, and some pay 0%. A product that costs $30 at 3% earns about $0.90.
  • A 24-hour window. Unless the reader adds to the cart, the sale must happen the same day.
  • Delayed payment. About 60 days after the month ends.
  • Strict content and link rules, with termination possible on 7 days' notice.

Amazon suits physical products where readers buy quickly, such as comparisons and gift guides. It suits software, services and high-ticket topics poorly.

What to use instead or alongside

None of these replaces Amazon for every niche, and each has its own terms. Figures below are from the directory records as of October 2026.

Other retail and marketplace programs

  • eBay Partner Network: 1-4% of sale, capped per category, with a 24 hours cookie, run in-house with a $10 minimum payout.
  • Walmart: 1-4% per sale, 3 days cookie, run on Impact. The directory notes that the often-quoted per-category split appears only on affiliate blogs and not on a Walmart page, so it is left out.
  • Shopify Affiliate: up to $150 per paid referral, 30 days cookie that can extend up to 400 days through a free trial, paid on Impact.

Networks with many brands

If you want one login for many merchants, look at Awin, Impact and CJ Affiliate. All three are networks, and rates and cookies vary by advertiser. Approval is per brand on Impact. Our guide to the best affiliate networks compares them in detail, and the CJ network page lists the programs on that network.

Recurring programs for software topics

If your audience buys software, a recurring program can pay every month a customer stays. The directory lists 457 live programs, of which 219 pay recurring commission. Examples from the records: HubSpot Affiliate pays 30% recurring for up to 12 months with a 180 days cookie, and Kinsta pays $50-$500 plus 10% lifetime recurring with a 60 days cookie. Semrush pays $50-$450 per sale plus $10 per trial with a 120 days cookie, though it is per sale and not recurring. See the full list under recurring commission programs, the best recurring programs and the SaaS affiliate programs guide.

Use per-sale programs when the product is a one-off purchase and recurring ones when the customer pays monthly. To see two of them next to each other, use the compare tool.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a website to join Amazon Associates?

Yes, the program requires a qualifying website or mobile app. You must also accept the Operating Agreement without change, and creators with a social following are pointed to the separate Amazon Influencer Program.

How much does Amazon Associates pay?

Standard US rates run from 0% to 10% by category, as checked on 2 October 2026. Luxury Beauty and Amazon Explore pay 10%, most home and kitchen-type categories pay between 3% and 4.5%, and gift cards, wireless plans and alcohol pay 0%. Rates differ by country.

The directory records 24 hours, or 89 days if the product was added to the cart in that session. The Program Policies describe the same two windows. A session also ends when the customer places an order for a non-digital product or clicks another Associates link.

When and how does Amazon pay?

Commission is paid about 60 days after the end of the month it was earned. Per the directory, methods are direct deposit, Amazon gift card or check, with a $10 minimum for direct deposit and gift card and $100 plus a $15 fee for a check.

The policies allow Special Links in email, SMS and direct messaging from your social media sites only when the communication is solicited, meaning the recipient opted in. Offline promotion using Amazon trademarks or logos in print, ebooks, mailings or oral solicitation is prohibited.

Do I need to disclose that I am an affiliate?

Yes. The Operating Agreement requires you to clearly and prominently state "As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases." on your site or any other authorised place. Also follow the legal requirements of your own country.

Can I use an Amazon Associates account in other countries?

Amazon runs separate programs per marketplace, so each country has its own sign-up, rates and rules. The directory lists programs in the UK, Canada, Germany, France, Japan, India, Brazil, Australia and others.

What are the best alternatives to Amazon Associates?

It depends on the niche. For retail, look at eBay Partner Network and Walmart. For software, look at recurring programs. For breadth, a network such as Awin, Impact or CJ Affiliate gives access to many merchants.

Conclusion

Amazon Associates is a sensible first program for a content site that sends buyers to physical products, because the brand converts and the rules are published. Its limits are a short tracking window, low rates in most categories and a long payment delay. Many sites pair it with higher-paying programs in the same niche.

Actionable next steps:

  1. Decide whether your site has the original content the policies ask for before you apply.
  2. Open the current rate table and note the category rate for each product type you plan to cover.
  3. Read the rule for new accounts inside your Associates Central after you are accepted, and plan traffic around it.
  4. Add the required disclosure sentence and review the email, offline and price rules before you publish links.
  5. Open your country's own Associates program page if you serve more than one market.
  6. Add one non-Amazon program for any topic where a recurring or higher-value offer exists.

Earnings are never guaranteed, and Amazon and every other program can change rates, windows and rules at any time. Confirm the current terms on each program's official page, before you join.

Program terms come from each brand’s own pages and change often, so confirm them on the official page before you promote. Links to programs on this site go to our program pages, and buttons that lead to a brand go through our click route and are marked as sponsored. No income is guaranteed.
